Our Island

Holbox’s warm and open arms culture is been around for hundreds of years. This fisherman's town in the middle of the sea has a great story. Discover all its richness and inviting ambiance.

The name Holbox means "black hole”, a place where time and space hold still, where everything stops and is suspended forever. This infinite place has an extension 40 km long and 2 km wide and can be found at the Northern end of Quintana Roo, linked to the peninsula by a large sand bar. You can bike from one side of the island to the other, or walk through water so clear that it feels as if you are walking across the sky.

The island, more civilized than just a few years back, still maintains its authenticity. It is nature’s haven, a place for tranquil living surrounded by friendly smiles. This fisherman’s town has always had a willingness to welcome friends and strangers alike into their homes to share food and stories.

In Casa las Tortugas, we fell in love with this lifestyle and embraced it completely.

Surrender yourself to island living and unplug. Take part in many of the rituals, classes, and experiences we offer. Let yourself be swept off your feet and into a hammock, with a margarita in one hand and a book in the other.

For the most part, cell phone signals fail to reach Holbox. Even if you are connected to WiFi, power will be out every now and then. It’s as if the island itself is begging visitors to unplug for a moment and enjoy the beauty it has to offer.

Green Living

Year after year, Holbox takes new measures to protect its valuable natural heritage and to embrace an environmentally-aware culture.

As space holders in the hospitality industry, Casa las Tortugas adopts environmentally-aware operating practices and thus makes sure that sustainability guides our everyday actions. Something that has become all-important to the way many of us want to travel!

The hotel is committed to the conservation of natural resources on the island of Holbox and therefore looks for an environmental, social, and corporate balance. Here is a glance at our sustainability policy:

  • Collaboration with and giving preference to local suppliers and artisans.

  • We employ staff from different local communities.

  • Promotion and aid of local cultural events in Holbox (thus ticking the ‘give-back’ box).

  • Minimisation of canned materials.

  • No use of straws, PET or aluminium cans.

  • No takeaway food in disposable containers (styrofoam or polystyrene).

  • Waste reduction policy.

  • Reuse of materials whenever possible.

  • Separate waste in situ and in collaboration with similar companies, move waste to an authorised recycling plant in order to minimise the environmental impact.

  • Commitment to saving energy and water, which are scarce resources on the island.

To us, sustainability is a business approach to guarantee our operations work in harmony with the environment, preserving native species and natural resources, and supporting local communities through fair and honest relationships
